Secular victory: Air Force issues religious neutrality policy

vruz: I don’t think it’s too great to make this a “secular victory”.  one would like to believe that most religious people (and even actual conservatives among them) think of themselves as reasonable people who respect the value of democracy (and the values it entails) without fear of being singled out as part of the nutty fundamentalist right. it’s a bad state of affairs when our worldviews are either liberal or nuts on the totalitarian fringe.

In a victory for secular America, a top U.S. Air Force official has issued new guidelines demanding that leaders at all levels take immediate steps to maintain government neutrality regarding religion.

Tuesday, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton A. Schwartz issued the new guidelines in recognition that the Air Force has failed in the past to adhere to the demands of the U.S. Constitution as well as its own regulations and policies with regards to the prohibition against the establishment of religion. Earlier this summer, the United States Air Force suspended a Bible based, Christian themed course mandated for all nuclear launch officers. The course called “Christian Just War Theory” was indefinitely suspended after being part of the curriculum for future nuclear launch officers for more than 20 years. Taught by chaplains at Vandenberg Air Force Base, the course used scripture from both the Old and New Testament to demonstrate that nuclear war can be a moral enterprise.
